DUST STORMS...

Violent Storms lead 100s of people to deathalmost every monsoon in Indian States of Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Delhi-NCR etc..Example- Recently the dust storms in northern india specially in UP and Delhi NCR region killed 100s of people. Lets get to know something about what they are and the science behind there formation..
What is a Dust storm?
  • A dust storm, or sandstorm, is a phenomenon common in hot and dry climates. They are also known as 'Haboob', which is an Arabic word for violent winds.
  • The strong storms can develop in many parts of the world and can travel for thousands of miles or even across oceans.
  • A dust storm requires a large availability of dust and enough power in the wind to lift the particles. They commonly occur with thunderstorms before it is about to rain.
  • When it starts to rain water does not manage to reach the ground as it is evaporated by the heat. This causes the air to cool down, meaning there is an area of cold air sitting above the warm air on the ground. The cold air comes down in a down-burst which splashes against the surface which kicks the dust upwards.
Why was the recent storm so devastating?
  • The recent storm was aided by ‘ideal’ conditions that magnified its intensity :-
1- There was huge thunderstorm complex that swept through the area overnight, generating high winds that also
    carried lots of dust.
2- Temperatures in Rajasthan reached 45®C.(main lower pressure building region in India which attracts the strong waterladen monssonal winds from high pressure regions ie;oceans.)
3- There was presence of easterly wind that brought in moisture.
4- The intensity of western disturbances increased.
  • Unsustainable farming practices have deteriorated the soil profile aiding the erosion.
  • There were more deaths also due to lack of disaster resilient infrastructure.

This image displays the condition in atmosphere after the Dust Storm had struck a place and the cold air is well set below the warm air..therefore, the warm air rises and it starts to rain at the meeting point of the front..

An Earthquake is a trembling, shaking and vibrations of ground caused by passage of energy in the form of waves via breaking of rocks. The most immediate cause of most of the earthquakes is 'Faulting'(breaking and movement of rocks). The actual location of or zone below the earth surface where faulting occurs is known as 'Focus of an earthquake'. This focus lies below the surface bu...
